The
Corporate Rescue: Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI)
solutions to bridging OSHA'S YEAR 2000 goals in the
high-tech workplace
Solutions
to lowering RSI compensation claims.
What
are repetitive stress injuries? The high tech office is
no longer the future. It is, now! The problems associated
with the fast paced office have created health issues and
costs which could stagger even the most profitable
company. The bureau of Labor Statistics says 25% of all
injuries are repetitive stress injuries and result in
lost work time, which cost employers more than $20
billion in compensation claims in 1996. Many of these
health issues are related to sitting in front of a video
display terminal (VDT ) or terminal fever. These issues
are headaches, eye strain, shoulder and back pain and
carpal tunnel syndrome (manual tasks during which the
wrist is repeatedly flexed and extended.)
What
OSHA regulations can you expect by the year 2000?
Beginning
in1997 OSHA will go from limbo to demanding regulation
relative to repetitive stress injuries, office ergonomics
and ergonomic standards for all companies operating in
the USA. It is OSHA'S goal to reduce work related
injuries resulting in medical treatment or restricted
work activity to no more than 6 cases per 100 full time
workers, (down from 8.3 per 100 in 1987 up to 9.5 in
1994). OSHA wants a partnership with business to develop
profitable strategies for preventing and handling
occupational safety and health. The object is to develop
a plan for preventing repetitive stress injuries.
Can
your company be held accountable?
As
recently as November 1996 Digital Equipment lost a
verdict of $6million to two legal secretaries and a
billing clerk who said they were injured by a keyboard
manufacturer for an RSI claim. California has become the
first state to enforce laws governing workplace
ergonomics. The law states that if a company records two
RSI's in one year, it must conduct ergonomic training,
evaluate the work site for hazards and take steps to
minimize repetitive motion injuries.
